Sidney Crosby führt die Pittsburgh Penguins zum Stanley Cup

(from the website sportreport.biz - 12.6.2016)

Stanley Cup Finale, Spiel 6:
San Jose Sharks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins 1:3 (0:1; 1:1; 0;1)
Tore: Couture (27.) bzw. Dumoulin (9./PP), Letang (28.), Hornqvist (59./EN)
Enstand in der Serie: 2:4
Playoff-MVP: Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins)

Engelage´s 48 saves lead Ritten to second Serie A title

The Pustertal Wolves have also lost in their fourth final appearance, while Ritten Sport has won the Italian championship for the second time in the past three seasons.

(from the website eurohockey.com - 17.4.2016)

In the first four games of the series, it was always the road team to earn the victory. Therefore, it was Pustertal´s plan to prolong this streak in Game 5 in ´Arena Ritten´. The plan also seemed to work out in the initial minutes, when Kevin DeVergilio on the 2-on-1 nicely fed Max Oberrauch to open up the scoring. DeVergilio even had the chance to gain a two-goal lead, but Ritten´s netminder Andrew Engelage denied the one timer.
However, the Wolves got themselves into the penalty trouble and the ´Buam´ made them pay. First, it was Brendan Cook´s lazer point shot on the two-man-advantage to tie the game, followed up by Dan Tudin´s 2-1 marker only eleven seconds later.
Ritten, who defeated Pustertal already in the 2014 Serie A finals, kept the pace high and made it 3-1 at the beginning of the middle frame. Mark Van Guilder´s gorgeous backhand pass froze net minder Tyler Weiman, making it an easy task for Brendan Cook to score on the wide open net. The Wolves tried to fight their way back into the game, but Julian Kostner´s goal on a great assist by 18-year old Markus Spinell decided the contest in the 47th minute. Van Guilder and Emanuel Scelfo netted two more for Ritten, while Ryan Kavanagh´s goal was not more than a consolation price in a 6-2 hockey game.

Engelage steals the show

In Game 6, the Wolves coached by Kim Collins wanted to show its 2000 spectators in ´Leitner Solar Arena´ how it could really perform. Pustertal also played a strong game, outshooting their rivals 17-10 in the first period. Ritten´s goalkeeper Andrew Engelage, who stopped 95.6 % of the shots he faced in the playoffs, continued his remarkable performance, stopping Patrick Rizzo´s one timer and Patrick Bona on the 1-on-0. Armin Hofer had Engelage beaten with a slap shot from the hashmarks, but this time it was the post to deny the Wolves.
The guests, who did not create lots of opportunities in the initial period with the exception of Alex Frei´s hitting the post, showed what efficiency means. In the 22nd minute, Markus Spinell and Julian Kostner again showed their chemistry on the 2-on-1, as Kostner had no problem to take advantage of Spinell´s pass. The two hometown forwards formed a crucial line in the post-season alongside Alex Frei, with both collecting a career-high 9 points in 14 playoff games.
The Wolves kept trying, but Engelage kept stopping puck after puck. In the 37th minute the Canadian goalkeeper, who is rumoured to join EBEL-club HC Bolzano, made his only mistake of the game and Ryan Kavanagh made him pay scoring the equalizer. Engelage was not able to control a bouncing puck and Kavanagh did not waste this chance.
Pustertal continued to create opportunities and Giulio Scandella had the go-ahead-goal on his stick. Scandella was able to find the rebound, but the puck would somehow not find its way past the goal line. On the counter attack, the Wolves defencemen Danny Elliscasis and Armin Helfer bounced into each other, leaving two forwards on the 2-on-0 you should never leave alone in the slot. Playoff topscorer Mark Van Guilder (12 goals and 11 assists in 14 games) gave the puck to Serie A´s best goal scorer Brendan Cook, who tipped in the 2-1 marker with his 43rd goal of the season.
Trevor Johnson, on a perfect pass by Justin Maylan, had the next huge opportunity for the Wolves, but it was again Engelage with one of his 48 saves in the game to be in the way. Brendan Cook added the empty netter and Ritten could celebrate its second ´scudetto´ in club history.
Celebrating the Italian championship will also stay as the last milestone in the career of Emanuel Scelfo. The 36-year old forward has competed in Italy´s top league since the 1997/1998 season, always playing for his hometown Ritten with the exception of two seasons in Merano.

Pustertal´s seemingly never-ending drought

Both Pustertal and Ritten have worked their way up to become one of Italy´s hockey powerhouses in the last ten years. After qualifying for the finals for the first time in 2006, when Ritten lost in the final series against the Milano Vipers, the ´Buam needed three more final appearances before winning their first national championship in 2014. Two seasons ago it was also a heroic goaltender performance to steal the show, when NHL-net minder Chris Mason robbed Pustertal of a couple goals to win the series in seven games. Also last season Ritten went to Game 7 in the finals against Asiago, losing it eventually.
For Pustertal it was the fourth loss in a final series since 2011. The 4-1 win in Game 1 of the 2011 finals against Asiago also remains the only time the Wolves have been able to win a game of a final series on home ice. This season they came close again to finally win the ´scudetto´, but experience, efficiency and roster depth were the difference makers for Ritten.
One man to feel especially unlucky must be forward Giulio Scandella. Scandella, a key player of Italy´s national team, has played in all big clubs in Italy since joining Asiago in 2004. Playing for Asiago, Milano, Bolzano, RItten and now Pustertal, the Montreal-native qualified for the final showdown six times and came up short in the end every single time.

Future in EBEL2?

With the 2016 Serie A season ended, this could have very well been the last Italian championship awarded in an only national competition. The four South Tyrolean Serie A clubs are pushing to merge the Italian league with Austrian second tier ´International League´. With only seven clubs remaining in Serie A, as it seems unlikely that Valpellice can overcome its financial difficulties, the plan is to cooperate with EBEL and create a new league with teams from Austria and Slovenia. While the sportive level of this new league might be lower than the one of the current Serie A, the goal is especially to improve attendance with the help of the marketing-department of Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. So once again, Italian hockey is awaiting an interesting off-season.

Salzburg defends EBEL title

Despite Colton Yellow Horn´s MVP perfomances for Orli Znojmo, Salzburg has confirmed its dominance in EBEL.

(from the website eurohockey.com - 15.4.2016)
EBEL Finals 2016: Salzburg - Znojmo

However, it did not always look as pretty as it ended for the favourited Red Bulls. After taking the series´ lead thanks to late game winner by Matthias Trattnig to start the finals, the Czech Eagles stroke back with two impressive performances. In the second game of the series, 21-year-old forward Lubor Sulik turned the game around in the final period to win 5-3, before Znojmo exploded in Game 3 with a 7-3 win on the road. Anton Buroda led the way for the Czechs with 3 assists, but it was an all-around team-effort to outwork the Red Bull and get under the skin of Salzburg. Head coach Dan Ratushny even benched top line winger Brett Sterling for the entire game after he he took an avoidable spearing penalty in Game 2.
Championship teams though know how to turn the momentum around and this is what Salzburg did in Game 4, returning the favour with a clear win in the Czech Republic. A great start into the game with two goals by Manuel Latusa and one by reactivated Brett Sterling set the stage for a 6-2 victory.
Salzburg´s top line with Sterling, John Hughes and Ryan Duncan stayed hot in Game 5, leading the team to a 4:2 win and earning the first ´championship puck´.
Znojmo had to win on home ice to force a Game 7. In the first two periods, the teams showed an exciting battle just as was the entire series, finding quick responses to each goal. In the third period Zdenek Kutlak´s slap shot on the power play beat goalkeeper Jan Lukas, who was phenomenal in the playoffs. The Eagles would not find any other response to the 4-3 goal and Red Bull could celebrate its second title in a row.

Experience and depth

In the end, it was the best team of the league to win the Cup. Salzburg was able to find a way to minimize the damages done by the league´s MVP Colton Yellow Horn, who was awarded the ´Ron Kennedy Trophy´. This was just one of the keys for Salzburg to win its sixth EBEL title in history. Experienced net minder Juuso Riksman, who has been awarded best goaltender of the Finnish Elite League three times during his career, grabbed Luka Gracnar´s starting job in the quarterfinals, giving the team security throughout the entire post-season. Overall, it was especially the Red Bull´s depth with four strong lines to make the difference in its third straight final appearance.
Despite coming up short in the end, it was a very successful season for Znojmo. Not only did they qualify for the Champions Hockey Leauge finishing on second place in the regular season, but they also were finally able to carry their strong performances into the playoffs. Injuries to some of their top defenceman, such as Andre Lakos, forced them to use forwards as blue liners, making it even tougher to compete with such a deep and skilled Red Bull line-up. Despite that, the Eagles put on a strong fight and may have just lacked some experience in the decisive moments compared to their opponents. Players like Peter Pucher, Jan Latter or Lubomir Stach have proven to be among the best in the league and will strive for success next year as well.

Big decisions coming

Next season seems far now, but Salzburg will have to make up for the losses of Konstantin Komarek and Dominique Heinrich, who will leave to play in Sweden.
Znojmo might lose its star player Colton Yellow Horn (29 points in 19 playoff games), who is rumoured to join league rival Linz.
The two teams might also play against a new club next year, as the league management is considering whether financially troubled Olympija Ljubljana remains a part of Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. If Ljubljana leaves the league, either Slovenian club Jesenice or MAC Budapest will be given the vacant spot. However, the league is not considering an expansion for the 2016/2017 season, meaning that there will still be 12 teams in EBEL.

Vallarsa, si gioca a «sledgehockey»

Da quest´anno a Laives si allenano i South-Tyrol Eagles, attivi dal 2003

(dal quotidiano Alto Adige - 08.11.2015)
South Tyrol Eagles in Leifers

LAIVES.

EBEL: Tom and Jerry trouble the Caps

The Bolzano Foxes visited the Vienna Capitals on Friday. In a third period thriller, Tom Pokel´s revenge was sweet, as the ´biancorossi´ earned three well-deserved points to snap the Austrians´ four game winning streak.

(from the website eurohockey.com - 9.10.2015)

9.10.2015: Vienna Capitals - HCB Südtirol 1 : 2 The game began with a cautious play by both sides. The Caps had the first real scoring opportunity on Florian Iberer´s one timer in the 5th minute, denied by the blocker of Jaroslav Hübl. On the other end of the rink Nathan Lawson also had to react quickly, stopping Jerry Pollastrone´s attempt with the edge of his skates.
In the 13th minute the Italians were punished with two minutes for too many men on the ice and the home team did not wait long to make them pay. Hübl stopped Simon Gamache´s first rebound chance with a beautiful pad save, but Kurtis McLean eventually got it done giving Vienna the lead.
Markus Gander had the best chance for Bolzano to tie the game in the first twenty. His wrist shot beat Lawson on the glove side, only to hit the post and send the teams into the first intermission with a close lead for the hosts.
The Foxes came out of the locker room with the intention to tie the game in the middle frame. Alexander Foster had the chance on the rebound twice, but Lawson closed the five-hole. Daniel Frank and Anton Bernard also created dangerous opportunities for the Italian record champion, who outshot the Caps 22-13 during the first 40 minutes of play. Even on Vienna´s man advantage it was the visitors to almost bring the puck behind goal line, as Stephen Saviano´s one timer was only caught by the Canadian net minder.
The Capitals, besides on some rare occasions, were mostly trapped in the defensive zone by the ´biancorossi´, who were perfectly prepared to challenge the vice champions. Tactical discipline, smart play and hard work were the key recipients of HCB when Pokel led them to the EBEL championship title two seasons ago. The US-coach tried to implement the same factors into the Caps´s team last season, but with much less success, before returning to the place of his biggest triumph this off-season.
Bolzano´s top line kept the pressure high also in the third period and got rewarded. After 20 seconds captain Alexander Egger brought the puck on net, Taylor Vause proved all his class giving the puck cross crease to Jerry Pollastrone, who had no problem to tie the game on the wide open net.
The teams battled hard for every puck in what had become a true thriller. The 4800 fans were on their seats when Egger lost the puck tohis former teammate MacGregor Sharp in the slot, but Hübl sponged up the rubber. With 3 minutes left on the game clock the Capitals were looking for the game winner on the power play, but the ´biancorossi´ survived.
What happened with 25 seconds to go was a reminder of what it means to score when it hurts most: Vienna-defenceman Troy Milam turned the puck over in the defensive zone, Taylor Vause picked it up and fired it past Lawson´s glove side, giving the Italians the three points.
It will not get any easier for any of the two teams on Sunday. Bolzano will visit Red Bull Salzburg in a rematch of the 2014 finals. The Vienna Capitals will travel to the Czech Republic to challenge league leader Orli Znojmo, who want to redeem themselves after a loss against Villach. Villach also picked the perfect time to get back in shape, as they will face Klagenfurt in the ´Carinthian derby´ this weekend

Thomas Larkin is the first Italian in the KHL

It is always special when players from smaller hockey nations take a step into the big hockey world. This time it is Italian national team defenceman Thomas Larkin, who has signed a contract with Medvescak Zagreb

(from the website eurohockey.com - 25.8.2015)
Thomas Larkin is the first Italian in the KHL

Larkin is in fact a man of firsts. Drafted in 2009 by the Columbus Blue Jackets, the big defenceman made a name for himself as the first ever Italian-trained player to be picked at the NHL Entry Draft.
Born in London, England, his family moved to Varese, Italy, at a young age. He learned the basics of hockey in Italy, before moving overseas at age 15 to play for the Philips Exeter Academy. Graduating from Colgate University, where he served as team captain for two season, Larkin started his professional hockey career in the 2012/2013 season with the Springfield Falcons. In his first seven appearances in the American Hockey League, Larkin also scored his first goal on the professional level. Signing an entry-level-deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets also made him the first and so far only Italian-trained player to have got a paycheck from an NHL-franchise.
In the following seasons he would split time between the two Blue Jackets farm teams, playing 19 games for their AHL-affiliate in Springfield and 33 games for the Evansville Icemen in the ECHL.
During the 2014/2015 season Larkin got Top 6 ice time in Springfield, collecting 17 points in 62 games. 139 penalty minutes in 88 games in the AHL also prove that he can does not shy back from the dirty areas of the game. It would though not be enough for the Blue Jackets to offer him a new contract and the stay-at-home-defenceman he was seeking a return to Europe.
It seemed almost certain that he would sign a contract with the only Italian club in Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, the Bolzano Foxes. Medvescak Zagreb though offered him a try-out and he could debut in the pre-season game against Villach, convincing the Croatian management and coaching staff to give him a professional contract in Europe´s top league for the 2015/2016 season. This marks a milestone in Italian hockey as Larkin is now the first ever Italian-trained player in the Kontinental Hockey League.
Due to playing in North America, Larkin ´skipped´ the international U20 level, but had represented Italy already at two Under-18 World Championships. Larkin debuted on the Italian national senior team as a student, representing the ´Azzurri´ at the 2012 Division 1A World Championships and also scoring his first goal on the international level. Larkin developed into a key player on the Italian blue line, also participating in two Top Division tournaments in 2012 and 2014.
Though, on a quick side note, he is not the only Italian-trained player to have been drafted by an NHL team, as also Thomas DiPauli, student at the University of Notre Dame, grew up in the small town of Caldaro, Italy, before moving to the USA. DiPauli is though not eligible to play for Team Italy, since the Washington Capitals-prospect has already represented the United States on various international events.
